  3. Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR)

Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR)

A general marker of inflammation in the body, used to follow rheumatic and chronic inflammatory conditions.

The ESR measures how fast red blood cells settle in a tube over one hour. Inflammation raises certain proteins that make the cells settle faster.

A high result is not a diagnosis on its own: it can rise with infections, rheumatic disease, pregnancy, anaemia and age. Doctors use it alongside tests such as CRP to follow disease activity and response to treatment.

Preparation before the test

  • No fasting needed; it can be done any time.
