The most common blood test: measures red and white cells, platelets and haemoglobin, and detects anaemia and infections.
A complete blood count gives an overall picture of your blood: red cells and haemoglobin that carry oxygen, white cells that fight infection, and platelets that help clotting.
Doctors order it in routine check-ups and for ongoing tiredness, dizziness or paleness (possible anaemia), fever or repeated infections, or easy bruising and bleeding. The values are read together: low haemoglobin with small red cells, for example, usually points to iron deficiency.
