Liver Function Tests (LFT)

Liver function tests combine the liver enzymes (ALT and AST) that rise when liver cells are injured, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), bilirubin (which causes jaundice) and albumin, which reflects the liver’s ability to make protein.

They are ordered for fatty liver, viral hepatitis, some long-term medicines and in routine check-ups.

Preparation before the test

• Fast at least 8 hours (water only).
• Tell the lab about the medicines you take.
