The test checks volume, count, motility and shape against World Health Organization criteria.

One result is not always enough; the doctor may repeat it after 2–3 months because production is affected by fever, stress and smoking.

Preparation before the test

• Abstain for 2–5 days before the sample.
• Give the sample at the lab (private room) or bring it within 30 minutes at body temperature.
